They were important in the history of colonization (e.g. Roanoke Colony, Jamestown, Newfoundland, to name a few), and during this time period, they became great rivals against the Spaniards. They overtook a lot of other colonies that were started by other countries, such as Scotland's Nova Scotia. When the British invaded these areas, disease usually followed.
